GUIDELINES
FOR PRACTICING YOGA
- Be kind to yourself when you practice yoga. Go slowly,
especially in the beginning, and listen to your body.
It knows what it can do. If it says "stop,"
stop. Don't push it hard. If you push too hard, you probably
won't enjoy it, and you may hurt yourself. If you practice
regularly, you will improve. And you will feel better.
- You should never get out of breath, feel tired or feel
as if you are straining yourself, when practicing Yoga
Asanas or Pranayama.
- Do not practice asanas between 12 noon and 1 p.m. The
sun is at its zenith and the body may get easily over
heated. You should stop doing asanas at 12 noon. Pranayama,
however, can be practiced between 12 noon and 1 p.m.
- Pranayama can be practiced a maximum of four times a
day: at sunrise, noon, sunset and at midnight. Yet, once
a day, or whenever you have time, is fine.
- You should keep cool and never over-do yourself, especially
if you are over 40 years of age.
- Do not practice yoga in the wind of an electric fan,
or in an air-conditioned room. You can easily catch a
cold.
- Do not shower, bathe or immerse the body in water, right
after practicing yoga asanas or pranayama. You may catch
pneumonia.
- You should wait at least 45 minutes. If you feel uncomfortably
hot and sticky, you can wipe the body with a damp cloth.
- Enter are being over-worked by the abnormal flow of
the breath (or Prana), which moves in a particular center
for a longer than normal period of time
* Please remember that no practice can be adequately
learned from a book or written instructions. The
guidelines given in the web pages are intended to
give you an introduction to yogic practices. However,
it is advised to practice asanas / pranayama or
any other yogic practice preferably in an Ahsram,
under the guidance of a Guru or a qualified yoga
instructor.
