Gomukha is a cow’s face. In this asana
the posture resembles a cow’s face hence the name.
Benefits
Physical
Helps for cramps in the neck. Makes the
leg muscles elastic, expands chest and improves respiratory
capacity. Improves mobility of shoulder joints. Strengthens
lungs and heart. Relieves backache.
Mental
It is useful for long time relaxation as
it gives a nice base, keeps the spine erect and maintains
awareness.
Pranic
Stimulates Ajna chakra or Dhahata chakra.
Techniques
- Sit on the floor with legs stretched out and palms by
the side of buttocks.
- Lean to your right and fold you right leg to keep your
right heel under the left buttock.
- Fold the left leg so as to keep your left knee above
the right knee.
- Place the left arm over the head and bend it at the
elbow and place the left palm near the left scapula. Take
the right arm back, bend it at the elbow and raise the
right forearm up behind back. Close the fingers of both
the hands behind the back.
- Push the right elbow behind the head in such a way
that the head presses against the inside of raised arm.
Keep the spine erect and pace right angles to the ground.
Close the eyes.
- Maintain this position for some time. Unclasp the hands,
straighten the legs. Rrepeat it by changing the leg position
and arm position.
Cautions
If you are suffering from a painful or
weak shoulder should do the asana cautiously. In the beginning
don’t stretch your hands too much.
Duration
2 - 10 minutes once on twice
